Google see “more robust” spam techniques

13th August 2008 10:48 am

InternetNews have published an interview they conducted with Sundar Raghavan, a product marketing manager with the Google Apps Security & Compliance team. In it he states that the team are detecting a much greater Spam volume and a much higher level of sophistication. “Between July and August we have started to see a very interesting pattern in term of volume and sophistication of e-mail threats incoming, around July 20 we started seeing a spoofed UPS tracking e-mail messages going to users. On July 24 saw a peak of 10 million messages.”

The main change in tactic is that the array of topics for many many of these spam messages are being taken from up to date news sites thus making them more difficult for recipients toidentify as Junk. Google engineers are trying to find the souce of all these messages but it is proving difficult. Much of the e-mail is being sent from Geographically diverse botnets.

Raghavan points out however that this increase in Junk mail may not actually be an increase in the volume being sent, merely that the increase in sophistication has caught systems unaware “Whenever we see an unusual spike it’s not always the case that spammers have increased their volume arbitrarily, It is the case that a few vendors have been ineffective at detecting the links. Once spammers figure that someone is not detecting their technique really well, they pummel the system.”

Sundar continues that he feels Google do have the capability to deal with this increase and that Google is constantly expanding its heuristics capabilities to automatically detect spam.
