Bebo joins Google’s OpenSocial platform

2nd November 2007 8:40 am

The UK’s number 1 social networking site Bebo today announced that it will be joining OpenSocial, a set of common APIs for building social applications across the web.

OpenSocial is a single programming model that empowers developers to build universally accepted social applications for users to enjoy regardless of the websites they use. Spearheaded by Google, OpenSocial marks the first time that Bebo and other social networks have partnered to support a common API.

“Developers and social networks have an important, symbiotic relationship, the success of which depends on developers not having to replicate the work they do to get their innovations in front of the largest possible community,” said Joanna Shields, President, Bebo.

“Bebo supports open standards, to make it as seamless as possible for developers to reach our 39 million strong community and provide intriguing and engaging features to our users.”

In addition to supporting OpenSocial, Bebo announced its plans to launch a Developers Platform that will make it easy for Facebook developers to port their applications to the Bebo platform.

Bebo’s adoption of OpenSocial is the first in a series of major announcements planned by Bebo before the end of 2007. Bebo is scheduled to make a further platform announcement on November 13, 2007 .
