Google host 404 masterclass on their seo blogs

Google’s Webmaster blog has a raft of postings this week about how Google deals with broken 404 links.

It’s useful knowledge for those of us in the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) industry and more than that it’s a clear reminder that websites need to be maintained vigilently. Google’s Webmaster tools are a useful kit for those charged with maintaining and optimising websites. It gives you are guarded view of how your site looks from Google’s end of things.

It can’t do everything for you of course but a using the tool available from Google you will have a useful toolkit for keeping the way clear for search engine crawlers to properly map your site.

More than just helping make life easier for the spiders it help give your visitors a better experience when using your website. Nothing puts off a user than load of dead links and “Sorry not found” messages. Inevitably pages come and go out of your site and with this comes a lag whilst the search engines catch up with the changes. It is a fundamental of Search Engine Optimisation and webmastering in general that these broken links need to be catered for, dealt with and then eliminated as soon as possible.
