London, UK. Hacker Gary McKinnon has lost has appeal against extradition to the US where he faces charges of hacking into Nasa’s computers.
Mr McKinnon admits the charge but argues he should be tried in the UK due to the ‘excessive’ sentence he could recieve from a US court. He states that he had no malicious intentions but is obsessed with UFO conspiracy theories.
His legal team have state “The temporary prohibition of our client’s extradition as granted by the ECHR on 12 August is now effectively lifted and the authorities of the United Kingdom are now free to extradite our client to the United States”
“Mr McKinnon has recently been diagnosed as suffering from Asperger’s syndrome. As a result, we will be writing to the home secretary again inviting a prosecution in this country,”
“Our client now faces the prospect of prosecution and imprisonment thousands of miles away from his family in a country in which he has never set foot.
“Our client’s case highlights a worrying trend where UK citizens are at the mercy of the ever-increasing tendency of overseas prosecutors to extend their jurisdiction to crimes allegedly committed in this country.”
His legal team have written to Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, should the request be turned down McKinnon should be extradited within two weeks.
