Yahoo! Addressing Job Seekers’ Concerns in Bleak Economy

By Andrew Redfern @ 9th September 2008 6:53 pm

Continued bleak reports of the current U.S. employment situation are affecting job seekers’ attitudes. The results of a new Yahoo! HotJobs survey reveal that one-third of survey respondents believe that landing a dream job in the current economy is just not possible.

Separately, more than 50 percent of respondents see no relief in sight, pessimistically reporting that they expect the employment situation to only worsen over the next six months.

Survey respondents (42 percent) assert that one of the biggest obstacles to finding a job in the current economy is that there are no openings at companies they are interested in or for positions respondents want.

However, perception is not always reality. Yahoo! HotJobs announces the launch of the HotJobs 100, a resource for job seekers who want to know exactly where to find the jobs.

The HotJobs 100 is a list of the top 100 companies across all industries that are currently hiring. The inaugural HotJobs 100 list reaches across a variety of companies, including popular retailers Macy’s and RadioShack. The complete HotJobs 100 list can be found at http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/HotJobs100, and will be updated on a quarterly basis.

To further assist those job seekers frustrated by their search, Yahoo! HotJobs is also releasing lists of the industries and geographical regions where hiring is the hottest.

Location, Location, Location

As in real estate, the job market also experiences hot zones and Yahoo! HotJobs data reveals California is feeling the effects of a job opening heat wave. Five of the top locations for finding a job are in California. Southern states are also hot for job seekers.

Best Metro Areas for Job Seekers:

** New York
** San Francisco
** San Jose
** Houston
** Atlanta
** Oakland
** Los Angeles
** Phoenix
** Sacramento
** San Diego
** Dallas
** Las Vegas
** Denver
** El Paso, TX
** Philadelphia
** St. Louis

“Sometimes it’s not about who you know, but rather where you go when conducting your job search,” explains Yahoo! HotJobs’ Senior Managing Editor Tom Musbach.

“There are geographic hiring hot spots, companies hungry for talent and stable industries that are growing in spite of the economy. There is absolutely no reason for people to feel stuck in a job because they are threatened by the economic landscape.”

According to Yahoo! HotJobs, the hottest industries right now include a variety of sectors.

Best Industries for Job Seekers include:

** Healthcare
** Retail
** Service, including Customer Service & Administrative
** Technology
** Finance & Accounting
** Telecommunications
** Manufacturing & Operations
** Government & Military

“The great thing about these in-demand industries,” says Musbach, “is that they include not only highly skilled jobs and jobs that require a degree but part time and temporary positions as well. There is opportunity for everyone, especially those willing to look outside their usual commute or traditional industry.”
