Google uses cell triangulation to target mobile search results

By Andrew Redfern @ 12th September 2008 3:04 pm

A post on the Google Mobile blog has highlighted the fact that the search giant is now using the cell in which a mobile is located in order to deliver search engine results that are more relevant to the user’s location.

The development will turn your phone into a guidebook to your immediate locale, as Google put it “If you want to find sushi nearby, just type ‘sushi’ and Google will return local business listings around you. If you want to know the forecast, type ‘weather’”. The system is currently only available in the US and UK but you can expect them to roll out in more countries in the near future.

This feature, whilst extremely useful, does however open up a privacy issue with Google effectively becoming a tracking station for it’s users. However they acknowledge this in the blog post “We take your privacy seriously and have designed Search with My Location so that it doesn’t associate your location with any personally identifiable information, even if you are logged in. We won’t send your location until you explicitly opt in, and you can always opt-out from the Gears Settings under the Tools menu.”

And SearchEnglineLand were not slow to point out the potential for online advertisers “Google Maps for Mobile currently has no ad inventory (although it could). Google Mobile Search has ads, though typically they’re well “below the fold.” As Google introduces more search ads in mobile and makes them more prominent Search with My Location becomes a potential boon to search marketers.”
