Today’s Google Trends: G Phoneby Andrew Redfern @ 23rd September 2008 10:46 am Todays hottest search on Google was “g phone”
With T-Mobile expected to announce the first G-Phone today, Google Inc.’s involvement in the mobile market should get much more attention going forward. The Web search giant’s foray into wireless with its Android operating system is expected to begin with the HTC Dream in October reported by blog.wired.com. “While many are likely to call this ‘The G-Phone’ we point out it really is just ‘a G-phone’ as Google seeks to have Android power many handsets across all the carriers, in our opinion,” said Canaccord Adams analyst Colin Gillis. He told clients that leadership in the mobile market is much easier if Google can get easier access to handsets, which he considers an area that may be difficult to breach with major carriers.
Mr. Gillis said G-phones will help extend Google’s leadership in mobile Web and boosting advertising coverage on its search drives more monetization. However, he expects the company’s September quarter will reflect an increase in hiring and Android will not be a meaningful near-term driver of revenue.
The T-Mobile G1 is expected to sell anywhere between 250,000 to 450,000 units by the year’s end, depending on when the phone hits retail stores, says Michael Gartenberg, vice president of Jupitermedia. At 400,000 units, it would represent about 4 percent of the smartphones sold during the fiscal fourth quarter in the United States, says research firm Strategy Analytics.
Android’s biggest asset is its open platform, said Rich Miner, Google’s group manager for mobile platforms, at the Mobilize 08 conference last week. With the release of the first Android-based phone, the operating system software will become completely open source, free and available to the industry for use and modification.
