Is Google Gambling Change The Final Nail In The Coffin For Yahoo UK?

By Andrew Redfern @ 23rd October 2008 11:21 am

Its a bad time (understatement!) for the guys over at Yahoo and they have some really difficult decisions to make in the coming weeks. Having published it’s 2008 third quarter financial results yesterday it announced it will be cutting 1500 jobs @ Yahoo worldwide; this was the second round of cuts this year and comes after a major downsizing exercise announced in January.

Add this to the shenanigans over at Yahoo! Japan in September of this year when they admitted that its much loved online-auction site had suffered a one of the world’s biggest security breaches with over 1.5m logins being fraudulent accessed by criminals so that they could sell counterfeit luxury goods.

On the 6th October this year Yahoo issued statements announcing that they have delaying the rollout of a Google Advertising deal that would see Google adWords results displaying in Yahoo search results.

The 16th October saw Google relax its law in UK ban on adWords campaigns for gambling sites; this was Yahoo’s only real competitive advantage within the UK as Yahoo has never had such a ban for gambling in the UK – and is a major setback to Yahoo at such a crucial time given the worldwide financial condition.

So could the changing of the Google’s Gaming laws be the final nail in the coffin for Yahoo in the UK?
