Google further relaxes the adWords restrictions by allowing wine and beer ads

By Andrew Redfern @ 31st October 2008 6:04 pm

SearchEngineLand are reporting that Google now allow users to advertise beers and wines on it’s market leading search advertising service adWords. The move stops short of “hard alcohol and liqueurs” but now opens the door for beer advertising in countries other than India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, or Malaysia whilst champagne and wine ads are permitted countries where such ads “comply with local regulations”.

This move follows closely behind Google allowing gambling advertisments and sets a trend for the search giant establishing a more open de-regulated adWords market.

Also an SearchEngineLand are reports that the proposed deal with Yahoo that would see adWords adds being displayed on Yahoo’s search results my be in danger of being abandoned. They quote an article in the Wall Street Journal as saying :

The two companies met Thursday with the Justice Department, part of a series of meetings to address the concerns of regulators. While the parties may agree to continue the talks — or they could reach a resolution — there are signs they are unwilling to make compromises to address the Justice Department’s objections . . .

The option to scrap the deal has been on the table before, but Google in particular has begun considering it more seriously as Justice Department talks haven’t progressed. One sticking point has been the department’s discussion of having the companies sign a consent decree stating the terms of the partnership. That would subject their compliance to continuing oversight by a judge.

This would represent a bigger blow to Yahoo’s long term plans than it would for Google’s however it will doubtless frustrate Google’s efforts to increase market share. Originally the companies had hoped to avoid anti-trust scrutiny on the grounds that they are not setting advertising prices and have no control over the market.
