Facebook award damages from spammers

Facebook has been awarded $873 million in damages from Atlantis Blue Capital after they sent “sleazy messages” to Facebook users. This represents the “largest judgment in history for action brought under the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act”
Spam is a constant annoyance to internet users and sites like Facebook and Myspace have come under particularly heavy attack. It is hoped that this ruling will act as a deterrent but given the nature of the setup of these spamming systems they are notoriously difficult to trace and control.
This unwanted intrusion into people’s accounts is a constant annoyance and this ruling sends out a clear message that if companies are found to be spamming they will be brought to task. Whether Facebook ever receive their award will be another matter however.
