Internet awaits the publication of the 2008 Google Zeitgeist list

It’s fast becoming an end of year tradition for web users. Following hot on the heels of the Yahoo hot list released earlier this week we are anxiously awaiting the release of the Google equivelant “Google Zeitgeist“.

Looking back to previous year’s results they are an interesting snapshot of what’s holding people’s interest. For example last year’s top five TV related searches were as follows :

1) heroes
2) lost
3) house
4) 24
5) bones

No surpirses there when you look at viewing figures over the last 12 months.

You’d imagine this years list will be dominated by the American Presidential Election with Obama, McCain, Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin & Joe Biden sure to feature prominently. Overall the figure will always be transitory in nature and merely so a snapshot of people’s interest at any one time but they are always a valuable indicator of what people are using the internet for and can therefore be looked on as a barometer of the evolution of the net as a whole plus the regional breakdowns show what people in different countries use the web for most.

This year in particular Google have made much more data available with their Google Trends and Google Insight tools so in effect every day is Google Zeitgeist day but the list is still eagerly anticipated and will doutless be featured heavily on numberous Internet new feeds once it becomes available.
