

This is one of those subjects that will cause immense interest in internet circles but barely a ripple elsewhere. As we mentioned last week Google’s new tools such as Google Insight and Google Trends essentially make every day a Zeitgeist day but the publishing of the years Zeitgeist list is a tradition now and it’s the time of year for tradition so who are we to break it.

It’s pretty much a no-brainer that Ms Palin would top the Fastest Rising category, the phrase “Risen without trace” could have been invented for her and the Beijing Olympics coming in at number 2 was hardly surprising. Very interesting that “Facebook Login” should zoom in at number three though. A sign of a site getting much more market share or a sign of a site who’s users can’t work out how to login?

Here in the UK the hot list seems to be much more technologically orientated :
Again Facebook is massively prominent. This is less surprising over here because the site is fast becoming a national obsession. The technology based keyword could show different usage patterns as Brits turn to the internet for information on gadgets. Whether this means we are more clued up or less would require much more in-depth analysis.
It is very easy to over analyse the lists however it defnitely makes for an interesting end of year read.
