SEO Research – Top Travel Markets Identified

By Andrew Redfern @ 24th June 2009 6:22 pm

Hotwire.com today announced the top summer travel destinations for Canadians this year. After the long and cold winter, what better way to celebrate the summer holidays and the longer daylight hours than hit the road?

You’ll be able to stretch your travel loonie while taking advantage of all summer has to offer, like viewing fireworks, dancing at outdoor music festivals or visiting city parks.

Travelers hitting the road can make their vacation dollar go further this summer with Hotwire. Hotwire works closely with brand-name hotels in top destinations to help fill unsold rooms, so customers get them at prices lower than any other travel site. Guaranteed*.

Based on bookings by Canadian customers for the summer travel season of 2009, six Canadian destinations, including the biggest cities of the country, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, top the list. United States destinations, including two in New York–New York City and Niagara Falls–round out the list.

“This summer travelers can find great deals across North America and better yet, closer to home,” said Clem Bason, President of the Hotwire Group. “We’re seeing hotel prices dropping like never before in local destinations across Canada and the U.S., making it easy to stretch your travel dollar this summer.”

The top 10 markets are:

1. Toronto: Marvel at the Festival of Fire international on-water fireworks competition, or sample over 250 beers at the Festival of Beer. Music lovers can check out the Waterfront Blues. And no visit would be complete without stopping by some of Toronto’s top cultural attractions including the Royal Ontario Museum or head to the top of the landmark CN Tower and take in the views.

2. Montreal: Feel the rhythm at the International Jazz Festival. For the more reflective, stop and smell the roses — and other flowers — at the Botanical Garden or spend a quiet moment in the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Montreal.

3. Vancouver: Stroll through the beautifully maintained grounds of Queen Elizabeth Park. Indulge a love of theater outdoors with Bard on the Beach. Be blown away by Vancouver’s Celebration of Light, the largest firework competition in the world.

4. New York City: With an endless amount of landmarks and famous cultural attractions, New York makes for a great summer trip. Catch a Broadway show, witness Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Competition in Coney Island, or taste all of the other flavors New York has to offer during Summer Restaurant Week.

5. Ottawa: Witness the pomp and circumstance on historical Parliament Hill. Cycling enthusiasts can criss-cross pathways and trails throughout the city. Train nuts can enjoy climbing the Gatineau hills in one of Canada’s last remaining authentic steam-trains.

6. Seattle: Don’t just visit the landmarks of the Space Needle and Pike Place Market. During summer, Seattle’s Seafair is one of America’s biggest community festivals, filling the streets, skies and waters with parades, planes and a whole fleet of objects, including The Milk Carton Derby and the Fleet Arrival.

7. Niagara Falls: See the splendor of Niagara Falls. Get in touch with nature at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. Get “jiggy” with it at the Irish Festival.

8. Chicago: Chicago offers something for every visitor. Catch a game at the historic Wrigley Field, visit Navy Pier or one of Chicago’s many museums. And the music never stops in Chicago. You can choose whichever style suits your fancy at events like the Chicago Blues Festival, Chicago Folk and Roots Festival or Viva! Chicago Latin Music Festival.

9. Boston: Experience Harborfest. Over 200 events, most of which are free, take place during the week-long, family-oriented festival, designed to celebrate both the city’s rich maritime heritage and historical significance.

10. Calgary: Explore the heritage of the Canadian West at Fort Calgary or Heritage Park Historical Village. The city’s Elliston Park is also the setting for GlobalFest, a multi-cultural festival and international fireworks competition featuring pyro-musical presentations.
