Search marketing experts have raised the claim that Google Analytics and other javascript-based web stats may be drastically under-counting referral traffic from Twitter. The number aren’t small either, following an experiment by marketer Danny Sullivan, an estimated 500% -1600% is being lost in the reported figures you see.
Danny tested his theory that Twitter was providing far more traffic by using a parameter in the source of the link to his site. In each occasion Google Analytic mis-reported the twitter referrals and yet by counting the number of landing pages using this parameter : “hahakaj?source=Titter…” Danny was able to ascertain the figures.
One theory for the mis-reporting is the way in which the Javascript is processed, web based twitter applications and indeed i-phones are not processing the javascript and as a result not being logged by Google. If you suspect that your stats are a little low, always refers to your log stats on your host server for the most accurate number of requests.
