Alot has been made recently regarding the visibility of Google in China, with access supposedly being restricted and Google trying to make it up and keep inline with all recommendations made by the chinese government. When looking over statistics for the year of 2008 there was an incredible $6.8 trillion spent online, at todays rate this transfers to £4.2 trillion. This is a massive amount to be spent online and believe it or not this is only 15% of the global polulation that generated such an income!
Where was the biggest percentage of this accumulated? You got it, its China taking a massive 17% of the online spend with America a close second on 15%. The number of internet users in China in 2008 was aproximately 253 million which is 33 million more internet users than America with a smaller percentage of the population. This gives Google the knowledge that if it could also get a good grip on the market in China that there is an awful lot of money to be made, aswell as the possibility of increasing the 19% population internet usage to help get more of the chinese people spending online.
When you look at the image below you see that the smallest percentage of online users came from the UK, however we seem to have a higher percentage of the population using the world wide web at 69%, this comes second only to USA with 72.5% of its population currently active on the internet. As the internet continues to grow and microsoft continue to realise their dream of a pc in every home, it is likely that we will see this spend increase year after year even during a global credit crunch.
