Googles Gmail is now the 3rd most visited webmail platform across the United States. Reports have confirmed today that between July 2008 and July 2009, the number of unique visitors to Gmail has increased from 25.3 million to a staggering 36.9 million.
Its not only the traffic that is on the increase, the rate of growth has also risen. July 08 to July 09 seen a growth of 46% compared to September 2007 and September 2008 which seen the growth of 36%.
Are Google certain they can take on Hotmail? I don’t know, but what I do know is that if they carry on, the will be very soon surpassing them. At the current rate of growth it is predicted that they will surpass hotmail by the end of February 2010. Hotmail currently has 47.1 million visitors which is more or less where it stood in September 2007, with only really a less than 2% increase.
Microsoft have recently tried to sink their teeth into Googles pockets with search engines, however is it possible as microsoft take 1% off Google, Google in turn take a much bigger chunk through the email set up. This is very possible as the efforts from Microsoft on their search engine, may result in a lack of research into their other platforms.
What does this mean to Google? With an increase in users, the value of their advertising is set to rise, if they finally overtake Hotmail then Google may more than double their profit from advertising towards gmail customers.
