Chicago Tribune re-engineers its website to appeal to mobile web users

By Andrew Redfern @ 17th March 2008 1:40 pm

Chicagotribune.com launches new site functionality that makes it easier for visitors to find related stories and improve their search experience.

Now, most articles on the site will include hyperlinked keywords throughout the text that would take visitors to a topic gallery that features the rich assets of the Chicago Tribune — related stories, photos and historical archives.

“Our visitors are often inspired by the topics they read in our reporting, and we find them going elsewhere to get more information,” said Alison Scholly, vice president/interactive and general manager/Chicago Tribune Interactive. “Our new topic galleries make it easier for users to find deep, rich information on a wide variety of subjects, and it keeps them engaged with our website.”

Users can access topic galleries by clicking on hyperlinks or by finding a listing for more than 15,000 keywords at
http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic. Content in the galleries is culled from the Chicago Tribune as well as other Tribune Company media properties, including the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Baltimore Sun and Orlando Sentinel.

Separately, chicagotribune.com also introduced this month a beta version of its site designed specifically for the Apple iPhone, a popular Internet-enabled multimedia mobile phone.

The new iPhone site, found at http://www.chicagotribune.com/iphone, is an abbreviated version of chicagotribune.com that was designed with iPhone users in mind. It features streamlined content for faster load time, larger fields/clickable areas for smooth touch screen navigation and bigger font size.

Chicago Tribune joins companies such as Facebook, Amazon and eBay that have already debuted iPhone sites.
