Voice-recognition announced for Yahoo! oneSearch

By Andrew Redfern @ 17th June 2008 6:21 pm

Vlingo Corporation today announced that it localised its voice-powered interface for Yahoo! oneSearch(TM), an industry leading mobile search service, by enabling the English language product to recognize Indian and Singaporean accents.

Yahoo OneSearch

Through Yahoo! oneSearch with voice, BlackBerry users in India and Singapore can access information on the mobile Internet with the power of their voice.

Available beginning today, consumers in these regions can download the new versions of voice-enabled Yahoo! oneSearch at http://m.yahoo.com from their mobile browser, or learn more about the products by visiting http://in.mobile.yahoo.com or http://sg.mobile.yahoo.com on their PC.

“Earlier this year, Yahoo! selected vlingo as a partner to voice enable its oneSearch mobile search service in the United States, giving BlackBerry users instant and easy access to the mobile Web. We are excited to add regional variants of English for India and Singapore as we initiate our expansion outside the U.S.,” said Dave Grannan, CEO, vlingo. “We look forward to supporting Yahoo! oneSearch globally as we add support for new languages throughout this year.”

Vlingo’s voice-enabling technology is a natural input method for mobile search queries and provides Yahoo! oneSearch users with a simple way to access better answers and relevant information on the mobile Web. Users do not need to change how they speak or memorize a list of commands. They can say what they want, how they want, and vlingo captures the results — word
for word. Vlingo uses a specialized set of technologies called Adaptive Hierarchical Language Models (A-HLMs) that provide an open interface unconstrained to particular applications. Vlingo adapts a complex set of statistical models based on regional usage — including adapting to the details of how users sound, how they pronounce words, and what they say
into particular applications on their mobile phones.

Yahoo! reinvented the mobile search experience with the introduction of Yahoo! oneSearch, a search experience specifically designed for the mobile phone that delivers relevant results and better answers in a user-friendly interface, removing the need for consumers to navigate through a sea of PC

Yahoo! oneSearch with voice is currently available on the BlackBerry Pearl, BlackBerry Curve and the BlackBerry 8800 series. For additional information on Yahoo! oneSearch please visit http://mobile.yahoo.com.
