Bebo expands senior management team8th July 2008 11:37 am London, 08 July 2008: Bebo, the global social media network, today announced the expansion of its Senior Management Team with the appointment of former Google managing director Kate Burns to the newly-created position of Vice President & Managing Director, Bebo Europe.
The new appointment further strengthens Bebo’s Senior Management Team following on from AOL’s acquisition of the company and its reformation as the centerpiece of AOL’s newly created People Networks business unit led by Joanna Shields President of AOL People Networks and Chief Executive of Bebo. In her newly appointed role, Ms Burns will take overall responsibility for driving Bebo’s business in the UK and Europe whilst reporting directly to Joanna Shields who continues to lead the site globally as Bebo’s Chief Executive Officer. Welcoming Kate Burns’ appointment, Joanna Shields, Bebo CEO said: “Kate has a proven record in the UK’s digital media industry, having played a key role in its development over the last decade. Her creativity and dynamism makes Kate the natural choice for this new role as Bebo looks to further strengthen its position internationally.” Ms Burns has extensive experience launching and leading several businesses to success including Google and Doubleclick. She joined Google in 2001 as its first employee outside the US and went on to develop the company’s most profitable and fastest growing region, rising to become Director, UK, Ireland and Benelux. Burns will be based at Bebo’s international headquarters in London, assuming her role on 04 August 2008. Kate Burns said: “Bebo has been at the very centre of the dramatic changes we have witnessed in the media landscape over the past two years. I am looking forward to becoming part of Bebo’s extraordinary management team and to working on one of the most engaged websites in the UK to continue to develop this rapidly growing business.” Prior to joining Google, Kate Burns was Pan-European Sales Director for Altavista and before that she spent three years at Doubleclick joining as their first sales person in the UK. She has also worked for Ziff Davis and News International and most recently joined the world’s largest independent video sharing site, Dailymotion, as the company’s first Managing Director for the UK. Under the leadership of Joanna Shields, Bebo was acquired by AOL and now forms part of the company’s newly created People Networks business unit which combines Bebo, the AIM and ICQ personal communications network, widget technology company Goowy Media and social search and answer service Yedda. People Networks’ collection of community platforms reach 80 million unduplicated users worldwide.
