Cuil launches…then disappearsby Andrew Redfern @ 28th July 2008 9:57 am The interest generated over last week’s launch of CUIL (pronounced “cool”) has quickly caused the site to be suspended. If you try to log onto their homepage at www.cuil.com you get a simple message reading :
Whether their servers were simply swamped or the launch was always intended as a short glimpse of the servic it’s clear there has been a tremendous interest in the new search engine. The site, however, did get positive reviews from those who’ve been using it Michael Arrington or the Washington Post said “We’ve been testing the engine for the last hour. Based on our test queries Cuil is an excellent search engine, particularly since it is all of an hour old. But it doesn’t appear to have the depth of results that Google has, despite their claims. And the results are not nearly as relevant.” “With Google, we’ve all gotten used to trying a slightly different search to get the refined results we need. Cuil does a good job of guessing what we’ll want next and presents that in the top right widget. That means Cuil saves time for more research based queries. And I want to reemphasize that Cuil is only an hour old at this point, Google has had a decade to perfect their search engine.” Cuil, it would seem, has the pedigree to succeed and the basic technology seems sound. The missing ingredient is the actual takeup of the service. If the initial interest is anything to go by they’ve certainly got off to a positive start. Would you like to know more about search?
