Sport : Who’s obsessed with what & when.

By Andrew Redfern @ 29th July 2008 2:14 pm

Those long summer weeks between the end of the football and rugby seasons are known as the silly season. Transfer rumours abound and increasingly the internet is the place that they break. Sport is one of the mainstays of internet. It provides a perfect medium for the news, discussion and commerce that goes along with it.

Google Trends

To this end the Hit Search team have been scanning Google Trends to see who is searching for what sport.

In the UK it’s clear to see that football rules the roost with cricket and rugby making only the occasional charge to the top of the volumes charts. The two main spikes in cricket and rugby interest coinciding with the last rugby world cup and the England V Australia Ashes cricket series. It’s worth adding to this the traditional spike in tennis interest around Wimbledon time.

In Australia the situation much more level with the highest volume dependant on the time of year.

It’s worth remembering that Football on this graph will be the Australian Rules version of the game. It is interesting how well defined the differing regional allegiances are shown in the state by state breakdown. Tradional AFL heartlands such as Victoria show much less interest in rugby whilst states like New South Wales and Queensland have rugby clearly generating more searches.

The green line in the above graph shows interest in soccer. a relative newcomer to Australia but it’s interesting to see how their A-League and their burgeoning list of exports playing in Europe are generating countrywide interest.

The trend data from the US shows a similar mixed picture depending on which season is currently running however it does seem to show that football (the American version) seems to be gaining interest year upon year.
