In a cheeky move Yahoo! staff briefly launched Yuil, an alternative to Cuil, as a move to extol the virtues of their own product Yahoo! Boss.
Yuil was only up and running for a short time but it does make a valid point about hype versus content. It’s a point the makes of Cuil will be only too happy to endorse because the central pillar of their launch was the volume of sites it indexes rather than any fancy gimmickry.
It was a humourous little satire of the buzz surrounding the new search engine (we at Hit Search are seeing an astounding amount of volume and enquiries since the start of the week both on our own site and on the web in general) and it was aperfect way for them to highlight the capabilities of Boss which allows users to build a custom interface for Yahoo search results. Yuil was, according to TechCrunch (WashingtonPost), created by Sam Pullara of Yahoo! who said “I’m sure everyone saw the recent announcement of a new search engine, Cuil. I thought I would have a little fun with it and put together a quick parody of it by mashing up their UI and Yahoo!’s search results.”
Hats off to Sam, top work.
