A report on the BBC website has said that the privacy watchdog The Information Commissioner’s Office is satisifed that the Google Street View system has enough safeguards in place to guard people’s privacy and safety.
The comes hot of a heels of last months well recieved Tour de France route teaser across France. In this limited roll-out that face of the pedestrians were blurred protecting the bystanders indentities.
In a statement the ICO say “Although it is possible that in certain limited circumstances an image may allow the identification of an individual, it is clear that Google are keen to capture images of streets and not individuals” however they have stated that they would seek meeting with Google before the system’sUK images goes live. Google have welcomed the move saying “We’ve always said we will not launch in UK until we are comfortable Street View complies with local law and that we will use technology, like face-blurring, licence plate blurring and operational controls, such as image removal tools, so Street View remains useful and in keeping with local norms wherever it is available.”.
So it seems a virtual tour around the UK will be here sooner rather than later.
