Hitwise, the internet analysis specialisits, have published a report showing the Facebook has now overtaken ebay as the 3rd most visited site for UK users. The data shows they have overtaken ebay, who’s stats were steady, and are closing in on “second place” as it’s visit numbers approach the levels of Live Hotmail.
Obviously this data doesn’t show the full story, people use Facebook in a different way to sites like eBay, but it’s a trend reflected elsewhere across the web and shows that the doubts about Facebook’s sustainability have been addressed. 6 months ago the talk was all about the Facebook bubble having burst and that users were abandoning the popular social networking site because of a rising tide of application spam and the ill feeling generated over the Facebook Beacon. Since then it seems Mark Zuckerberg et al have listened to user concerns gave users what they want. The user based translation projects and innovations such as the Facebook chat facility are evidence of this. The only cloud on the horizon is the growing numbers of people voicing their dislike over the new facebook profile layout. Aimed at uncluttering people’s profiles (especially those with a large number of applications embedded on them) the compartmentalised profile has came in for criticism. At present a Facebook ‘protest’ group on the subject is awash with complaints.
