Twitter & Bing Put Search Engines on a Whole New Levelby Andrew Redfern @ 15th July 2009 4:17 pm Blogger We all know that microsoft have been trying to muscle Google out for quite some time with virtually no success at all. The new branding of “Bing” has been microsofts latest attempt to unseat Google as the market leader in search engines. It looked promising although did see a small decline recently as the novelty wore off, however they have now combined with the popular micro blogging website called “Twitter” in order to try an revolutionise search.
With twitter itself now taking a market share of searches, it needs to be considered as a tool for marketing websites. Microsoft have been quick to act on this and created a search engine that combines results from both, bing and twitter on the one page for easy access to users. We believe this can really help revolutionise search as twitter does bring you LIVE results. Live search is probably the future of search engines where all results are categorised each second bringing back websites and blog posts created maybe minutes previous. The website is called www.bingtweets.com for those interested, and if microsoft put into action a correct marketing strategy, then there is no reason that this can’t bring microsoft and bing into a larger share of the search engine market. With celebrities and every day people both using twitter this could very well bring a massive number to a place where you can tweet, search twitter and search the web all in one convenient place. Blogging as a marketing and SEO toolby Andrew Redfern @ 15th July 2009 4:10 pm Blogger Blogging is nothing new and neither is companies using blogs as promotional tools. Here at Hit Search we set up and manage blog for many of the our clients in a wide range of sectors. These can be official on-site affairs or off-site ones hoast by excellent systems like Wordpress and Blogger. It is a an invaluable marketing tool and invariably works as a superb foil to traditional marketing efforts. One of the primary adventages it brings is that by it’s nature it is a broadcast medium that the customer has total control over. It can be used as much or as little as required and it is totally at the use’s disposal. Should the blog be on-site it acts as a great souce of extra content for the site. If the posts are relevant to the organisation’s main niche then this copy will be naturally fresh and keyword rich. This cannot help but have a benefit to the site and the company in general. Off-site blogs offer advantages of their own. By their nature they exist outside the sphere on the main corporate site and so can be free to cover a wider array of topics and be a ideal way to engage with the public in a semi-official way. This opens up avenues of discussion that would not ordinarilly be available on an official corporate website whilst still retaining control of which content that goes online. Key to the success of this corporate blogging is keeping a regular flow of content. This may require getting a team of staff members with access to all add their posts or even a dedicated copywriter to keep the content flowing. The nature of the blogging systems employed means that with minimal effort, technical knowledge and man-hours the blog will build up with page after page of content that will be presented in a format that’s accessible to both interested users and the search engines. The latter or these is, in a way, just as important as the former because it means that the site will gradually build up and become an authoritative resource for the sector in question. Whether on-site or off-site this will be an extremely useful corporate resource. Related Content Drives New Advert Revenueby Andrew Redfern @ 3rd December 2008 7:59 pm Blogger Publishers no longer have to bid good-bye to online visitors prematurely thanks to a powerful set of Related Content services from NewsGator that give readers more of the content they crave. New Related Stories and Related Topics widgets post, next to every story, contextually relevant headlines and/or topic key words linking to additional stories. Whether from the publisher or third parties, the extra content translates into readership, clicks, ad impressions and revenue. “Why leave readers wanting more when you can actually give them more, automatically, and keep them on your site and clicking through?” said Jeff Nolan, vice president of NewsGator’s Media and Consumer division. “Our widgets make it simple to maximize the value of your content and keep readers coming back.” The Related Stories widget offers readers headlines of interest. When they click on a headline, a fly-out window appears with the opening paragraphs of the story. Another click reveals the full article. Ads can be embedded at every turn. The Related Topics widget automatically presents contextually related topics to readers as key words. Readers click on the key word of interest and are redirected to a new page of stories relevant to the key word. Again, each step is a potential ad impression. In addition to engaging readers and generating ad revenue, Related Content services enhance search engine optimization by expanding content, providing another channel to gain readership and increase page views. The services also eliminate publishers’ reliance on traditional paid news sources. Publishers who wish to supplement their own content with related stories from third parties can draw on the NewsGator RSS database, the industry’s largest repository of free content. This repository is the result of NewsGator’s pioneering RSS reading/delivery services. The company adds 8.5 million new articles to the repository every day, indexing and aggregating 3.6 million feeds and archiving 4 years of historical content. Importantly, the company tracks more than 44 million “relevance events” in this activity, ensuring related content is truly relevant to the principal article. Publishers can control their widgets’ look and feel, search action and content sources through Editor’s Desk, an easy-to-use NewsGator-hosted platform that makes it quick and effortless to build, manage and track widgets. NewsGator offers two pricing models for Related Content services: hosted (transaction based) and free (ad supported with revenue-sharing). Huffington Post Leads Political Blogs During Election Seasonby Andrew Redfern @ 22nd October 2008 9:58 pm Blogger comScore (Nasdaq: SCOR) today released a study of visitation to political blogs and news sites during the 2008 presidential election season, which showed strong gains at most sites compared to year ago. HuffingtonPost.com led among a group of selected stand-alone political blogs and news sites with 4.5 million visitors in September, up 472 percent versus year ago, while Politico.com attracted 2.4 million visitors (up 344 percent) and DrudgeReport.com saw 2.1 million visitors (up 70 percent). “With each new election cycle, the Internet is playing a more significant role in shaping the stories of the day that are so crucial in formulating public opinion on issues and candidates,” said Andrew Lipsman, senior analyst at comScore. “That most mainstream news outlets now have their own political blogs is a testament to their increasing reach and influence. However, several independent blogs unaffiliated with larger media outlets paved the way in this space and are really beginning to enter the mainstream public consciousness with this current election cycle.” 1) Huffingtonpost.Com Looking at the demographic profiles for the top three sites, HuffingtonPost.com, Politico.com and DrudgeReport.com, one can conclude that visitors to these sites tend to be older, wealthier, and more likely to be male than the average U.S. Internet user. Of the three sites, Politico.com skewed the oldest with 23 percent of its visitors age 55 and older, while DrudgeReport.com skewed wealthiest, with 40 percent of its visitors earning at least $100,000 a year, and had the highest concentration of males at 57 percent. HuffingtonPost.com, the site with the largest audience, was the most similar of the three when compared to the overall U.S. Internet audience. Would you like to know about Content Development? This year : Povertyby Andrew Redfern @ 14th October 2008 12:37 pm Blogger Tomorrow bloggers all over the world will be dedicating their blogs to discussing global poverty as part of Blog Action Day 08. As with last year’s Environmental discussion people are being encouraged to sign up and have a global dialogue through this ad hoc network of blogs. As the Blog Action website puts it “In 2008, the Blog Action Day theme is Poverty. Bloggers are free to interpret this as they see fit. We invite bloggers to examine poverty from their own blog topics and perspectives, to look at it from the macro and micro, as a global condition and a local issue, and to bring their own ideas, views and opinions on the subject. Because Poverty as a subject for blogging can feel a little daunting, we’ve prepared a series of resources to help bloggers get started with tackling this issue” “We invite bloggers to examine poverty from their own blog topics and perspectives, to look at it from the macro and micro, as a global condition and a local issue, and to bring their own ideas, views and opinions on the subject.” They also suggest that if you are participating and you blog is monetarised (via Google adSense for example) you might donate the proceeds to a relevant charity project. The event is accompanied by a 12 hour live debate hosted on BlogTalkRadio. A post on the their site says “On Wednesday, October 15, the network will host a 12-hour Talkathon for Poverty Relief. Airing from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. EDT, the program will be anchored live from Denver, Colorado, by BlogActionDay.org’s Easton Ellsworth, with BlogTalkRadio hosts sharing co-hosting duties from throughout the U.S. Leading bloggers around the world are scheduled to appear as guests, along with notables from the political, entertainment and literary arenas. More than 7,800 websites have already signed on to participate in this year’s Blog Action Day by blogging about poverty and aiding poverty-relief efforts. Among the blogs currently involved are TechCrunch, ReadWriteWeb, LifeHacker, Mashable and ProBlogger. The organizers estimate that some 9.6 million people worldwide will read about the event on October 15.”
It’s an interesting project and will certainly energise the blogging community. With this many people participating generating that much content it’s certain to highlight the issues that are on people’s minds. So far they have 8,635 sites signed up so the results will be well worth a read. It is a prime example of how the nature of the internet lends itself to truly global, un-censored debate on global issues. Catherine Bray, commissioning editor of Channel 4 site 4Talent Central, writes a blog which normally gives her personal take on her professional projects, whether that’s interviewing actors or going on the set of TV shows. She said, “I wanted to be involved with Blog Action Day, but initially wasn’t sure how to do that as I didn’t want to crowbar in something for the sake of it. Then I realised that although I had blogged fairly superficially about a triathlon I did last month to raise money for Shelter, the UK housing and homelessness charity, I hadn’t talked about where that sponsorship money was actually going and, most importantly, why. So I’m going to be approaching it from that angle, hopefully getting to the relevant information behind what was originally just a fun personal project”. Stuart Fowkes, online press officer for UK charity Oxfam, says “Obviously for Oxfam, blogging about poverty is something we do every day, but to have the entire global blogging community focused on poverty issues for a day is a great way for people to ask themselves - and each other - how poverty actually affects them and what changes need to take place. Blogging in and of itself won’t achieve anything concrete, but it can shift opinion and motivate people to begin to make a difference. And for us, Blog Action Day couldn’t come at a better time because almost a billion people are now being affected by the rises in food prices around the world, which is one of the most serious threats to the lives of the poorest people.” Involvment like this and that of the 1000s of other readers and participates is what the organisors are hoping for so if you have a take on these matters sign up and get invloved at blogactionday.org. Google facing lawsuit over Blogger anonymityby Andrew Redfern @ 15th August 2008 4:25 pm Blogger Google have been served with a lawsuit over a blog on it’s Indian subsidary. Mumbai-based Gremach Infrastructure Equipments & Projects Ltd is demanding Google disclose the name of a person who criticised it on a blog written by a blogger called Toxic Writer.
The court order stated that Google India have four weeks to reveal the identity of the blogger. At this time Google is yet to reveal the blogger’s name. Should Google loses the case a precedent could be set leading to challenges to the anonymity of blog writers. This will see a fundamental shift in the dynamic of blogging. Companies have long argused that they have no meaningful real right of reply or means of defending themselves if they are attacked anonymously via online blogs. Whilst this open medium is a perfect platform for vigilant whistle blowers it is also an open, unregulated forum that is ripe for slander and defamation. Gremach are saying they have been subjected to a “hate campaign.” and whilst the blog in question has been taken down they are seeking further legal recourse.
