Google Mobile App to find Hottest Locations

By Andrew Redfern @ 14th February 2011 11:29 am iPhone Marketing

Google have launched a real time social location application based on a heat map to help find the busiest places at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. The free app, (Heat MWC) which is available for iPhone and Android platforms, has been developed to help find the hottest places in Barcelona, including the busiest bars, stands and press conferences. Google has teamed up with ad agency Jung von Matt Stockholm to develop the app which finds the hottest place in Barcelona at any time.

The app can filter people down to which mobile handset they’re using or which country they are from. It also uses Bump API technology to allow users to swap contact details by bumping their handsets together.

Sony Ericsson has launched a new handset at the conference which runs from the 14th -16th February, the Xperia Play on Android 2.3 platform. Allows users to download and play PlayStation games, this groundbreaking handset features a sliding PlayStation style controller. The Xperia Play is set to launch in the UK in April 2011 and is said to be the first of a number of handsets that meet Sony’s new standard for gaming mobile phones. These are aimed at the growing trend of users moving towards mobile phones rather than dedicated portable gaming devices.

Does the Apple IPod face stiff competition from Microsoft’s: Zune?

By Andrew Redfern @ 17th August 2009 1:51 pm iPhone Marketing

Its finally coming, Zune, Microsoft music and media playing device is du

e for release in on the U.S side of the pond in Mid September. High Definition media will be an option with 16GB or 32GB so not huge in comparison to Apple. The screen is 3.3 and OLED touch technology-powered. What are good are the built in WIFI and radio receiver, and 720p HD.
Let’s talk cost, it is expected to hit the shelves at $219.99, so less than the IPod touch which makes it seriously competitive. The bad news is no UK date has been published for when we can get our hands on it. (eBay ?)
The big sell with Zune is the way it can connect with the Xbox. If you buy media via the Xbox marketplace you can transfer it to Zune, a little late coming from Microsoft but it does look like they finally have some kind of rival to the iPod.
Background:
Zune is the third in a line of previous failures from Microsoft, Apple are riding high with 70% of the media player market.
Apple App has shown 1 billion downloads in 12 months. Zune will try and rival this success but has some way to go before amassing the 50,000 Apps on Apple.
In response Apple are rumoured to unveil a new O/S : OS10.6 and a new camera i-pod, some say laid out as a tablet. Watch this space.

Google Chief Quits Board At Apple | Iphone Rejects Google Voice

By Andrew Redfern @ 3rd August 2009 4:58 pm iPhone Marketing

Google chief executive, Eric Schmidt has today confirmed that he will be stepping down from the board of directors at Apple. The decision comes mainly due to the fact that Google has increasingly started to compete with Apple with its range of products and services.

Apple boss Steve Jobs, announced that had Mr Schmidt stayed on, the conflict of interest between the companies would mean that he would have to leave most of the meetings within the company. Some of Google products that are competing with Apple include:

  • Google Andriod with Iphone
  • Google Chrome OS & Browser with Safari and Apple Mac

The Federal Trade Commission has been examining whether Google’s common ties with Apple might discourage competition. In May, Mr Schmidt said that he had not contemplated stepping down as an Apple director because he did not see the company as a “primary competitor”.

The decision for him to depart was a mutual one, Mr Jobs said.

“Unfortunately…Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest.”

Google is beginning to promote its Google Voice service – which assigns a phone number to users, who can let the user divert calls to that number to other phone lines.

Last week the Federal Communications Commission wrote to Apple and Google seeking more information about Apple’s rejection of a Google Voice application for the iPhone.

PointRoll, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) and leading provider of rich media advertising announced expanded distribution partners to run its rich media ads on the Apple iPhone. “The growth of our advertising footprint on the iPhone enables leading brands to create interactive and targeted messages that can be served on some of the most popular mobile sites available,” said Jason Tafler, PointRoll CEO.

iPhone Credit Card Processing

By Andrew Redfern @ 3rd February 2009 12:15 pm iPhone Marketing

Apple had no idea when it launched its iPhone that it would be releasing about 5 million mobile credit card terminals into the hands of business owners. That’s exactly what Apple did. The sleek phone has been turned into a mobile credit card processing device, thanks to an impressive little application called ProcessAway.

The software is made for an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch and works over any available network connection. Transactions can be processed at places such as conventions, street fairs, antique shows, and by business owners performing mobile detailing, on-site consultation or construction.

The list is endless on who could benefit by offering the convenience of accepting credit cards on the spot and the confidence of getting immediate authorization for a credit card payment.

Business owners can use their iPhone to conduct real business. The ProcessAway software utilizes the Authorize.net gateway. Authorize.net was one of the very first Internet payment gateways and today they have one of the largest customer bases. They are continually releasing new and innovative tools to make their payment gateway even more powerful. The Authorize.net API is what fueled the development of ProcessAway and allows the millions of iPhone (and iTouch) users to turn their device into a credit card terminal.

The business owner is not limited to mobile transactions through their device. The Authorize.net merchant account used with ProcessAway includes an option to download transactions into Quickbooks and also a comprehensive Virtual Terminal. This gives business owners the benefit of processing transactions out of the office with ProcessAway and in the office through the web-based Virtual Terminal, all with a single account. Even though the Virtual Terminal is available, ProcessAway was designed as a stand-alone comprehensive processing solution that can be used effectively in any environment.
