Vertical Search: TripAdvisor now has over 15 million reviews

Vertical search engine TripAdvisor today announced it now features 15 million reviews and opinions, up from 10 million in June 2007.

TripAdvisor-branded sites reached more than 25 million unique monthly visitors in the past year.

“When we started out in 2000, I never imagined we would achieve this level of growth. We began with hotel reviews and we now also feature candid photos, videos, favorite lists, travel wikis, forums and more, to help travelers around the world plan the perfect trip.

Today, we have dramatically more content and attract a larger audience than any other travel media company in the world and we’re one of the top three overall travel brands worldwide,” said Steve Kaufer, founder and CEO of TripAdvisor.

“We expect to continue to expand our global footprint and grow organically and through continued acquisitions of best-in-class travel sites.”

Vertical Search: India gets its own Expedia

Expedia today announced its entry into India with the launch of Expedia.co.in. Expedia.co.in is the newest addition to Expedia, Inc.’s global portfolio and is the seventeenth Expedia(R) branded site.

Its launch marks continued momentum for Expedia in its global expansion efforts, and further emboldens the company’s leadership in the Asia-Pacific region.

“The launch of Expedia India provides us an additional foothold as we continue to invest aggressively in Asia to match the enormous scale and potential of the region,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO, Expedia, Inc.

“Our goal is to grow our international revenue to half of our total revenue, and burgeoning travel markets like India are key to achieving that goal.”

In 2007, Expedia, Inc.’s international revenue accounted for 32 percent of worldwide revenue, up from 28 percent in 2006. The online travel market in India is projected to have strong growth potential, and Expedia is looking to establish a leadership position in the market.

Expedia.co.in has been designed specifically for Indian travelers, offering a global selection of nearly 80,000 hotels and over 3,000 attractions, with payment in Indian rupees. Expedia also provides fully localized service and an in-country customer care center staffed with dedicated agents who speak both Hindi and English.

“As the number of Indians traveling abroad continues to grow, the strength of Expedia’s international supply gives us an advantage over existing travel providers in the market,” said Sharat Dhall, managing director, Expedia India. “We aim to be the International travel expert for Indians, who can now travel the world with confidence with Expedia.co.in.”


Live Search embraces Vertical Search

MSN Live Search today rolled out a new update which has embraced vertical search like non of the other major search engines.

The official search blog outlined the new layout that Live Search will be adopting for category searches on popular products within a category.

The average rating and sales price are shown below the a product image with an option to browse more products on the MSN Shopping engine.

The engine allows the user to research the products by reading the collection of user reviews and viewing a summary of the overall opinion that users have about that product.

The Official Live Blog explains - “We’ve indexed millions of products and user reviews through a combination of crawling Web sites and obtaining feeds from partner sites.

Computers and electronics are the most popular categories for product research online and this is where we put a lot of focus for this release. But-because we know people look for other products (e.g. Gucci bags) and not just LCD TVS or MP3 players-we will continue to increase our selection and depth for more categories in the future.

Specific Product Searches - Searches for specific products - such as Nikon d40-now show a quick summary of the product, including a graphical summary of user opinions (called “User reviews at a glance”). The team is continuously working on ensuring that product name variations trigger the relevant product results.

Clicking on a product with ratings takes you to a detailed product summary page. This page enables you to visually explore user opinions on various aspects of the product (quality, ease of use, etc) and filter them by both positive and negative opinions.
