Yandex.Maps now shows road junctions

10th May 2008 12:05 pm Yandex

Yandex adds interactive maps of road junctions to its Moscow mapping service. This new handy tool provides drivers with ready-made road junction solutions and helps planning a trip. An example of how the search engine tool look is listed below.

Yandex road junctions

The map shows about a hundred major junctions including all junctions on the Third Ring Road. Some junctions are simply interesting to look at, for instance, the crossing of Lyublinskoe highway and the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD) looks like a fluttering butterfly, and the net of road junction at Taganskaya square may be well known to many Moscow drivers who had ever got lost there.

The number of road junction maps will be increasing, and the traffic information will also be constantly updated.

“It is no easy matter to get out of some Moscow junctions even when driving with a GPS navigator or a map,” says Evgeny Khramov, head of the Yandex information services. “The interactive maps are clearer. You can look at them before setting off, or print them out and take them with you to avoid any surprises on the road.”

Road junctions map is yet another Yandex service designed for drivers. Another Yandex traffic-monitoring tool Yandex.Traffic shows traffic in Moscow, Kiev, Saint Petersburg and Ekaterinburg.

In addition, the Traffic 2.0 program was launched this March and Yandex.Auto, a car-for-sale search service, started this April.

Yandex monitors the quality of its clicks

7th April 2008 5:34 pm Yandex

Yandex has today implemented quantitative indicators to measure quality of websites in the Yandex Advertising Network (YAN).

In addition to regular human moderation, partner websites will also undergo automated check-up. The first automated check-up is followed by manual examination by a moderator. In perspective, it will speed up the entry process for quality websites looking to become the YAN members.

This will also allow monitoring the existing members, whose quality might change after they join the Network. Website quality is measured automatically using data from Yandex.Metrics.

“User behavior on a made-for-advertising site differs from what a user does on a made-for-person site,” says Anton Popov, head of the Yandex Advertising Network.

“There are many parameters describing user behavior, such as, time spent on a website, time spent on one page of this particular website before switching to another page or before clicking on an advertisement, number of users leaving a website after viewing only one page on it etc.

Both the website quality and the way it generates traffic may contribute to the website low conversion rate. Untargeted traffic is not what Yandex.Direct offers to its clients and may be the cause for a website to lose its membership in the Network”.

Right after Yandex started using quantitative indicators in its website moderation technique, several hundreds websites dropped out of the YAN.
