The Times : Google ads not quite ready to roll on YouTube9th May 2008 2:28 pm YouTube Reports say Google’s adSense based advertising system is almost ready to be rolled out on YouTube : The Times (London) : Google, the search giant, has said it will introduce new types of online advertisements in an attempt to increase revenues at YouTube, the video-sharing website it owns. Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, said that the adverts - which will appear while a person is watching a video on YouTube - would be different from previous types of video-related advertising, which has tended to appear before or after a clip. “We have new ad products that are not pre-roll and post-roll,” Mr Schmidt was quoted as saying at a conference in California, but he declined to give more details. “Think of them as ads that use the page around YouTube in interesting ways.” Google has said it wants to increase the revenue derived from YouTube, which it bought for $1.65 billion two years ago, but admits that it hasn’t yet found the “breakthrough” that will enable it to roll out a widespread advertising platform without annoying users of the site. Can’t make it to Cannes? YouTube is the next best thing9th May 2008 9:30 am YouTube Admittedly it’s a distant second to actually going to Cannes but YouTube are teaming up with National Film Board of Canada’s Online Film Competition to bring net users access to snippets and short films from The Cannes film festival. Additional to this access is the fact that users will actually be able to participate in the festival and vote for the winners of one of the fringe awards. “The Short Film Corner at Cannes is one of the world’s premier destinations for shorts. But you don’t need to make the trip to France to see the best of what the festival has to offer, thanks to the National Film Board of Canada’s Online Film Competition Cannes 2008. In its fourth year, the contest features ten shorts, selected from among 650 films from over 40 countries. Representing an eclectic mix of languages and genres, the finalists are all available for viewing on the NFB’s YouTube channel. The prize? In addition to bragging rights, the director of the winning short film will receive a professional DV camera and a portable computer with post-production software. Ready for the best part? You determine the winner. That’s right — the winning film will be chosen by audience voting, based on the one-to-five-star rating scale you know and love.” It’s another example of how online video can be used to allow events to become truly global. YouTube looks to showcase voter opinion in the run-up to the presidential election23rd April 2008 1:34 pm YouTube In a post on their blog YouTube are encouraging voters to post vids highlighting their concerns and opinions as part of their coverage of the 2008 primaries and presidential elections.
The post says : “If you spent any time watching YouTube recently, you might have seen a slew of videos uploaded by voters, news organizations, and the candidates surrounding the Pennsylvania primaries. A lot has happened on the campaign trail since the last primary in Mississippi over a month ago, and so we partnered with C-SPAN to see what issues are on voters’ minds right now. During the last three weeks, many of you around the country submitted responses to the question “What issue matters most to you in this election, and why?”; your videos touched on such issues as healthcare, education, the economy, and immigration. Among the most memorable was this video from a teenager concerned about the Iraq War, and JoeFelice’s video called “Where’s Washington”, which uses a clever pun to discuss the importance of checking governmental power. In the past week, the C-SPAN bus rolled across Pennsylvania to ask voters the same question, and hundreds of people weighed in. See the clips below from college students, parents, military veterans, local and state politicians, and other citizens who agreed to go on-camera to voice their hopes, fears and dreams about the country’s future. “ Read the full post here : What issue matters most to you? The Times : China blocks YouTube over Tibet protests17th March 2008 4:10 pm YouTube The Times, London : China has closed down access to several of the world’s most popular websites in an apparent attempt to censor international coverage of the violence that is unfolding in Lhasa, the Tibetan capital. YouTube, the video-sharing website which has become a home to amateur footage of news events, has been blocked to Chinese users since Saturday, and there are also reports that the news pages of Yahoo!, the internet portal, have been made inaccessible. In addition, the entire Guardian website has been closed down as of today, and other sites - including Times Online - have had access to their coverage of recent events in Tibet severely restricted. Popular sites which assimilate news from different sources - such as Google News - have been subject to what is known as ‘keyword filtering’, where a Chinese internet user attempting to load a page which contains words such as ‘Tibet’ or ‘Dalai Lama’ will see the site stall. YouTube opens itself up to developers12th March 2008 5:09 pm YouTube YouTube & Google are launching a suite of dedicated APIs to allow users to customise their interface to the popular video sharing site. Jim Patterson of YouTube Product Management said : We try really hard to make YouTube as open as possible. Anyone can upload and view videos, which can be embedded anywhere and viewed on all kinds of different devices. And, of course, anyone can participate in our community by commenting on videos, rating them, and sharing them with friends. Nevertheless, we worried that we weren’t open enough. So, we pulled some all-nighters and added some powerful new ways to integrate YouTube content and community into other websites, desktop applications, video games, mobile devices, televisions, cameras, and lots more. For users, the exciting news is that they will be able to actively participate in the YouTube community from just about anywhere, including the online destinations and web communities they already love and visit regularly. For partners and developers, YouTube has grown into much more than a website. It has become an open, general purpose, video services platform, available for use by just about any third-party website, desktop application, or consumer device. We now provide a complete set of (CRUD) capabilities for uploading, managing, searching, and playing back user videos and metadata from the YouTube “cloud,” managed by us. We do all of the hard work of transcoding and hosting and streaming and thumbnailing your videos, and we provide open access to our sizable global audience, enabling you to generate traffic for your site, visibility for your brand, or support for your cause. Meanwhile, we provide full access to our substantial video library, enabling you to attract users and enhance the experience on your site. It’s all free, and it’s available to everyone, starting now. Technically, we have introduced some new APIs. (This is just a geeky acronym for Awesomely Powerful Interactions, which is what users are now capable of performing from just about anywhere.) Building upon our existing APIs for querying the YouTube library and playing embedded YouTube videos, we have added the following new API services for external developers and partners:
