Mobile PPC Gains More Impression Share – Big News for Small Ads

iStock_000005695306SmallA report into PPC activity, during the first quarter of 2014, claims that mobile PPC has increased its share of impressions in the US. It is the latest in a number of signs that mobile ads could one day dominate the market and should already be part of your PPC campaign.

With the popularity of mobile phones and tablet computers the way that people search is changing and that means that the way that companies market themselves through search advertising should change too. If not, they could be missing out on an increasingly dominant section of their consumer demographic.

According to the report, 28% of PPC ad impressions were accounted for by mobile ads on smartphones and tablets.

Mobile phone impression share is up 35% in 2014, after enjoying 17% of impressions. The continued popularity of tablet computers led to an increased impression share of tablets, up to 11%. This is an increase of 21% on the previous year.

Certain industry commentators have estimated that mobile devices could account for more than 40% of paid search impressions by the end of the year. So, why would that matter to your business? What is the difference between a mobile ad and a desktop version?

In truth, there are a number of differences, from the layout of the ad, which can be optimised for the dimensions of a phone or tablet screen, to the functionality of the ad which can be improved to best serve the touch screen functionality and more. With a mobile ad there is a considerable benefit to including a clickable telephone number so that customers can talk to the company directly.
